Parrots are complex creatures, as are their behaviors. Some are friendly and outgoing while others are timid and unapproachable. Some birds are independent and can entertain themselves for extended periods of time... others are very dependent and will vocalize incessantly if left alone even for short periods of time.
As guardians, one of our greatest challenges is to teach our parrots behaviors that promote positive relationships with us. In order to do that, we must understand how parrots learn. Empowered with this tool, we can then begin to replace undesirable behaviors by teaching new, more desirable behaviors.
simply states, “There is never JUST behavior”. The environment plays a role and sets the stage for a behavior to occur and the reinforcement/consequences of the behavior predict the likelihood of the behavior recurring. By careful rearrangement of the environment and the use of positive reinforcement, it is possible to teach our companions new behaviors.
Frustrated guardians often consider rehoming or surrending their bird to a rescue as the only alternative. THERE ARE OTHER OPTIONS. If you would like assistance in working with your bird, we are here to help. To begin the process, please request a Behavior Assessment Form by eMailing Janet@projectperry.com
