The Central Virginia Parrot Sanctuary serves primarily as a permanent home for birds that are not capable or suitable for human companionship. Many have lost faith in human compassion and are finally happy with sharing free flight with others of their kind. Keep checking the website out for updated pictures of them enjoying this. However some birds do arrive here and may be bird-aggressive or do prefer human companionship. We do our best to evaluate and adopt such birds out.

For a list of current birds up for adoption click here.

Due to the ever-increasing amount of rehoming requests, we have enhanced our adoption program under the new leadership of Sheryl Covie. To read more about this program, click here. For those interested in adopting, you must first read about the program which also details the steps involved with adopting.

Adoption fees

  • $5 - very small (i.e. parakeets, finches)
  • $50 - small (i.e. cockatiels, lovebirds)
  • $150 - small / medium (i.e. conures, quakers, senegals)
  • $250 - medium (i.e. amazons, african greys, eclectus)
  • $400 - large (i.e. macaws, cockatoos)

No breeders or bird brokers will be considered.

Adoption Guidelines

Due to the ever-increasing demand to assist people with the rehoming of their companion parrots, we have enhanced our adoption program. The program is led by Sheryl Covie, Director of Rehoming Services with oversight by the Sanctuary's Board of Directors.

Charlie is physically unable to fly.)

Contact sheryl@projectperry.com with your request. Be sure to provide as much information as possible about your home and ability to properly care for a parrot. We can then provide you with the adoption or foster application by email for you to print out and bring with you to the meet and greet.

The next step is to attend one of our meet and greets held at the Sanctuary. These are held every month, sometimes a few times during each month. Ask Sheryl when the next meet and greet is scheduled.

After meeting and speaking with us, a home visit can be scheduled. Sheryl, an elected Director or volunteer will come to your home to dicuss the quality of life you can offer a parrot and offer any help or recommendations for the new home.

If approved, we will conduct a foster-to-adopt period in which you take the bird in as a foster. The bird is brought to your home by us and assistance is given in setting the bird up in your home. Follow ups by email or phone are conducted at this time to see how the bird is doing and if any assistance or advice is needed while the bird settles into its new situation.

If during the foster period things are going well and you wish to adopt the bird, we return once more to evaluate the bird in its new home. If all is good and everyone's happy (especially the bird!) we then finalize the adoption.

NOTE: No breeders or brokers will be considered. All foster placement and adoptions are conducted with binding contracts. Adoptions can only be finalized after a minimum of one month of fostering and if all the above requirements have been met.
